Meet the members of Stormland Rising
Michael Ostlund - Singer/songwriter, acoustic guitarist, and founding
member of Stormland Rising.
I’m the great grandson of a Montana cattle rancher, and a Swedish
immigrant cobbler, born and raised in Tacoma, Washington.
After college, I chased a career as a college basketball coach for 25 years.
Influenced by the country/rock sound of the 80s/90s country vocal
groups, Red Dirt Country, Southern Rock, and The Eagles, I continue to add
songs to the catalog I started in the mid-90s.

I’m a Northern Michigan–raised guitarist and recording engineer/producer, shaped by 12-string folk and late-night classical and jazz via Interlochen Arts Academy and WIAA radio. In 1978, I apprenticed at Scotland’s Findhorn One Earth Studios and later became chief engineer, recording acoustic, folk, and classical projects. After moving to Dallas in 2006, my wife, Letha, introduced me to Red Dirt country. In spring 2025, a stormy jam with singer-songwriter Michael Ostlund sparked Stormland Rising.
J.R. Gulley – Bass Guitar, background vocals, voice-over artistCo-Founder
I’m a Texas-born bassist, background vocalist, and voice-over artist raised on a peanut farm in Pearsall, just south of San Antonio. I grew up around red dirt, farming, ranching, and a whole lot of music, playing in bands with my brother and cousins. I spent eight great years in the Rio Grande Valley, where I met my wife, Yvonne (and fell hard for the food), before crossing the state and finding my Bad Weather Brothers.
Stormland Rising blends roots, grit, and harmony-born songwriting shaped by Red Dirt country, Southern rock, and classic American influences. Formed after a stormy 2025 North Texas jam, the band unites singer songwriter ichael Ostlund’s story-driven catalog, guitarist/producer Michael Creamer’s seasoned musicianship, and Texas bred bassist J.R. Gulley’s groove and harmonies. Together, the trio delivers weathered songs with an authentic country rock sound
